Brahm’s Lullaby

Lyrics

Go to sleep little one,
Wishing you golden dreams now,
As I rock you while you sleep,
Know that safe watch I’ll keep.

Yes, it’s true, I love you,
Wondrous gift that I cherish,
Yes, it’s true, I love you,
Go to sleep little one.

Go to sleep little one,
As I gaze out my window,
Stars are twinkling up above,
Each is sending you, its love.

Moonlight glow, winds will blow,
Night is calm and protecting,
Moonlight glow, winds will blow,
Go to sleep little one.

La la la, la la la, la la la la la la la,
La la la la, La la la, la la la la la la la.

Yes, it’s true, I love you,
Wondrous gift that I cherish,
Yes, it’s true I love you,
Go to sleep little one.

One my favorite traditional lullabies adapted for modern sensibilities. These soothing songs can help calm children before bedtime.

The Rainbow Song

Lyrics

Oh, there’s a rainbow glowing inside of me,
I feel a rainbow here every day,
Oh, there’s a rainbow glowing inside of me,
And it feels like it’s here to stay.

Oh, there’s a rainbow glowing inside of me,
I feel a rainbow here every day.
Oh, there’s a rainbow glowing inside of me,
And it feels like it’s here to stay.

See a red and an orange and yellow hue,
Now there’s a green, blue, violet too,
Now my wonderful rainbow helps me feel
So much love when it’s shining through,
Love when it’s shining through.

Oh, there’s a rainbow glowing inside of me,
I feel a rainbow here every day,
Oh, there’s a rainbow glowing inside of me,
And it feels like it’s here to stay.

My own little rainbow is there for me,
It’s the strength and beauty I feel,
So, I’ll reach inside not let that rainbow hide,
‘Cause it’s reflecting the best in me,
Reflecting the best in me.

I’m going to spread that rainbow around the world,
I’m going to give that rainbow away,
I’m going to spread that rainbow around the world,
But I’ll keep some for a rainy day.

Oh, there’s a rainbow glowing inside of me,
I feel a rainbow here every day,
Oh, there’s a rainbow glowing inside of me,
And it feels like it’s here to stay,
And it feels like it’s here to stay,
And it feels like it’s here to stay.

This song conveys the idea that we can reach inside to find our own rainbow of joy and love. I encourage the children to spread their rainbows around the world, but to keep some for themselves for those rainy days.

Hush Little Baby

Lyrics

Hush little baby don’t you cry,
Mama’s going to sing you a lullaby.

Hush little babe, don’t say a word,
Mama’s going to buy you a mockingbird.

And if that mockingbird won’t sing,
Mama’s going to buy you a diamond ring.

And if that diamond ring won’t shine,
Mama’s going to buy you a five and dime.

And if that five and dime gets broke
Mama’s going to buy you a Billy goat.

And if that Billy goat won’t pull,
Mama’s going to buy you a cart and bull.

And if that cart and bull turn over,
Mama’s going to buy you a dog named Rover.

And if that dog named Rover won’t bark,
Mama’s going to buy you a horse and cart.

And if that horse and cart fall down,
You’ll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

Skye Boat Song

Lyrics

Speed Bonnie boat like a bird on the wing,
Onward the sailors cry,
Carry the child on the wave as we sing,
Over the sea to Skye.

Loud the winds howl,
Loud the waves roar,
Thunderclaps fill the air.
See the storm rage,
But as it leaves,
Calmness is everywhere.

Speed Bonnie boat like a bird on the wing,
Onward the sailors cry,
Carry the child on the wave as we sing,
Over the sea to Skye.

Though the waves leap,
Soft shall ye sleep,
Ocean’s a royal bed.
Rocked in the deep,
Mother will keep
Watch by your weary head.

Speed Bonnie boat like a bird on the wing,
Onward the sailors cry,
Carry the child on the wave as we sing,
Over the sea to Skye.

Over the sea to Skye.

The Cherry Song

Lyrics

I gave my love a cherry that had no stone,
I gave my love a chicken that had no bone,
I gave my love a ring that had no end,
I gave my love a baby with no crying.

How can you have a cherry that has no stone?
How can you have a chicken that has no bone?
How can you have a ring, that has no end?
How can you have a baby with no crying?

A cherry when it’s blooming, it has no stone,
A chicken when it’s hatching, it has no bone,
A ring when it’s rolling, it has no end,
A baby when it’s sleeping has no crying.

One my favorite traditional lullabies adapted for modern sensibilities. These soothing songs can help calm children before bedtime.

Little Star

Lyrics

There’s a little star shining on me,
I feel it with all my might,
There’s a little star shining on me,
I know things will be all right,
There’s a little star shining on me,
It must be I’m special too,
There’s a little star shining on me,
There’s no one like me, it’s true.

I like to go swimming, and skating is fun.
There are many things I like to do,
And when I hear music, can’t keep my feet still,
And I like to collect rocks, do you?

There’s a little star shining on me,
I feel it with all my might,
There’s a little star shining on me,
I know things will be all right,
There’s a little star shining on me,
It must be I’m special too,
There’s a little star shining on me,
There’s no one like me, it’s true.

It seems you’re not the same as me,
We have different interests, we do,
And you’re taller, your skin is much darker than mine,
There’s a little star shining on you.

There’s a little star shining on me,
I feel it with all my might,
There’s a little star shining on me,
I know things will be all right,
There’s a little star shining on me,
It must be I’m special too,
There’s a little star shining on me,
There’s no one like me or you.

There’s a little star shining on me,
There’s no one like me or you,
There’s a little star shining on me,
There’s no one like me or you.

In this song, I want to convey that each child is special and unique. Also, I like to tell children that we all have our own interests and that some of them might be different than those of others.

Join Hands

Lyrics

Join hands, join hands,
We can build this country together,
Join hands, join hands,
We can build a future and share our dreams.

Join hands, join hands,
We can build this country together,
Join hands, join hands,
We can build a future and share our dreams.

In a country that is free, gleaming lakes and trees,
Birds sing their songs every morning, evening,
Yes, there is a place for every single face,
It’s you and me together.

Join hands, join hands,
We can build this country together,
Join hands, join hands,
We can build a future and share our dreams.

Join hands, join hands,
We can build this country together,
Join hands, join hands,
We can build a future and share our dreams.

In a world that is free, safe for you and me,
Children sing and laugh, every morning, evening.
Yes, there is a place for every single face,
It’s you and me together.

Join hands, join hands,
We can build this country together,
Join hands, join hands,
We can build a future and share our dreams.

Join hands, join hands,
We can build this country together,
Join hands, join hands,
We can build a future and share our dreams,
Build a future and share our dreams,
Let’s build a future and share our dreams.

This song introduces the idea of sharing good feelings, concepts and positive thoughts with others. It also reinforces the idea of empowerment, that we can help to make good things happen in the world. I want to leave children with the feeling that each one of them is important.

My Monkey At His Best

Lyrics

Well, I had a little monkey; he had a long, long tail,
I put him in a cage, to the monkey it was jail,
How he rattled on those bars without giving me a rest,
‘Til I opened up that cage and saw my monkey at his best.

He went swinging on the lampshades, climbing on the chairs,
Swinging on the curtains and climbing up the stairs,
Squeezing out the toothpaste and climbing on my desk,
Ripping up my papers; the house was sure a mess!

Well, I caught my little monkey, put him back in his cage,
But he looked so very sad, and then he showed his rage,
How he rattled on those bars without giving me a rest,
‘Til I opened up that cage and saw my monkey at his best.

He went swinging on the lampshades, climbing on the chairs,
Swinging on the curtains and climbing up the stairs,
Squeezing out the toothpaste and climbing on my desk,
Ripping up my papers; the house was sure a mess!

Well, my monkey wasn’t happy; I knew where he should be,
But the jungles were too far, many miles across the sea,
So, I took him to the zoo, ‘cause I needed a little rest,
Now I visit once a week and see my monkey at his best.

He goes swinging through the branches, climbing up the trees,
Sliding down the ropes, making funny faces at me,
Hanging by his tail, while he chats with all his friends,
I know that he is happy. Now this monkey tale can end!

This song is a mostly true story about a monkey named Chico. He was a pet living on my cousin’s farm. When our family visited the farm, I watched with amazement how the mischievous Chico roamed freely, often riding pigs’ backs and throwing eggs at the chickens!

I Wish I Could Be

Lyrics

I wish I could be on top of a tree,
I wish I could be a bird, then you see,
I’d fly and fly and fly and fly way up to the sky, the sky.
A bird’s what I wish to be.

I wish I could swim; I wish I had fins,
I wish I could be a whale in the sea,
I’d splash and splash and splash and splash,
And give my tail a mighty crash,
A whale’s what I wish to be.

Just wiggle my nose, then my mind goes,
I could be what I want to be,
I might be a bear, combing my hair,
Or playing ball in the breeze.

I wish I had paws; I wish I had claws,
I wish I could be a lion, you see,
I’d run and run and run and run,
Then lie in the sun, the sun,
A lion’s what I wish to be.

I wish I could hop; I never would stop,
If wishes come true, I’m a big kangaroo,
I’d jump and jump and jump and jump,
And everyone would hear me thump,
A kangaroo, I wish to be.

Just wiggle my nose, and then my mind goes,
I could be what I want to be,
I might be a bear, combing my hair,
Or playing ball in the breeze.

I like to pretend, have fun with my friends,
So happy to be especially me,
I’ll clap my hands to this song,
I’ll clap while I sing along,
It sure feels good to be me,
Yes, it sure feels good to be me,
Yes, it sure feels good to be me.

Children often love to pretend that they are some sort of animal; accordingly, the lyrics encourage them to imagine that they are a bird flying high, a whale in the sea splashing its tail, a bear combing its hair, or even a jumping kangaroo. At the end of the song, the children realize they are happy just being themselves and having fun with their friends.

The Pterodactyl Rock

Lyrics

Give it to me high, give it to me low,
We’re going to make these old bones go,
Let’s rock, do the Pterodactyl Rock,
Let’s rock; do the Pterodactyl Rock.

Fe fe, fi fi, fo fo, fum, do the Pterodactyl,
We’re going to have some fun, let’s rock,
Do the Pterodactyl Rock.
Let’s rock, do the Pterodactyl Rock.

They tell me that I’m crazy; they tell me that I’m bad.
They tell me that I’m lazy, makes me feel so sad.
But why oh why do I rock and roll?
‘Cause dancing is inside of my soul,
Dancing is inside of my soul.

Rock, rock, Pterodactyl,
Rock, rock, Pterodactyl,
Rock, rock, Pterodactyl,
Rock, rock, Pterodactyl,
Rock and roll, do the Pterodactyl Rock.

Soon all the dinosaurs were dancing all around,
Hopping and a bopping, jumping high off the ground,
But why oh why do they rock ‘n roll?
‘Cause dancing is inside of their soul,
Dancing is inside of their soul.

Rock, rock, Pterodactyl,
Rock, rock, Pterodactyl,
Rock, rock, Pterodactyl,
Rock, rock, Pterodactyl,
Rock and roll, do the Pterodactyl Rock,
Let’s rock ‘n roll, do the Pterodactyl Rock.

I take the children to the land of the dinosaurs where children meet a rockin’ pterodactyl that loves to dance to rock ‘n roll music despite the admonishment of its bullying peers. Children love dancing to this song, with a little motion of waving their ‘pterodactyl’ wings.
